Tongue Diagnosis and Food

Tongue and Pulse Diagnosis are the two pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). They are an integral part of every acupuncturists daily practice.

Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which has developed and continued over 5,000 years, recognised by the World Health Organisation which gives it an immense credibility. The Tongue, is easier to learn and less subjective than Pulse diagnosis and will show the depth and nature of a disharmony.

The benefits from Tongue diagnosis due to its usefulness as a measurement tool to gauge the progress of a disorder and its treatment. If the treatment protocol needs to be changed then the Tongue can advise us which possible route to take.

The Tongue can also tell us which foods that should be eaten or refraining from. Traditional Chinese Medicine Dietary therapy is a whole nutritional discipline in its own right. Assessing foods according to their Yin and Yang balance, Their Qi, Blood and Essence benefits. We have no problem assessing the best or worst foods for Diabetes, but what about Asthma, Kidney disease, Spleen, Gall Bladder, etc.

This short course will guide you through basic Tongue Diagnosis and the various conditions we can see on the tongue. It will present you with foods that can benefit the various imbalances seen on the tongue.

James O’Sullivan L.Ac. (China) holds a degree in Psychology and various practitioner qualifications in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). He has been practicing for over 20 years and now practices from his clinic in Galway City. He is a lecturer for Irish Acupuncture colleges and a visiting lecturer to Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, to which his Active Health College is affiliated. He has developed the Diploma in Tuina Chinese Acupressure course running in various VEC colleges around Ireland.

Course Title: Certificate of Attendance Tongue Diagnosis

Description: Reading the Tongue according to Traditional Chinese Medicine is an excellent way to fully guide us in assessing the health condition and the effectiveness of treatments. The tongue has many relationships and connections in the body, both to the meridians and the internal organs. It is therefore very useful and important during inspection for confirming diagnosis and development of imbalance. It can present strong visual indicators of a person’s overall harmony or disharmony.

Course Aims: This course includes the principals of Tongue Diagnosis and its relationship with imbalance. We have also included how foods are viewed in Traditional Chinese Medicine, how they are related to imbalance and which foods are advised for different tongue images.
The Workshop will cover the following topics.

  • Outline a brief history of traditional Chinese medicine
  • Briefly outline the concept of Yin, Yang and their relationship to the Tongue
  • Briefly outline the concept of The Vital Substances, Qi Blood, essence, Body Fluids, Shen.
  • Briefly outline the relationship between the Zang Fu (Organ system) and the Tongue
  • Outline a basic understanding of Disharmony according to Tongue Diagnosis
  • Tongue conditions; colour, shape, coating, moisture, Shen
  • Factors affecting Tongue Diagnosis
  • The normal tongue
  • Ideal conditions for tongue reading
  • How to inspect the Tongue landscape
  • Certain foods according to Traditional Chinese Medical principals
  • Foods that nourish the Vital substances
  • What foods are recommended for the different Tongue images

Requirements: This workshop is developed for all interested people regardless of qualifications.

Benefits: At the end of the course the practitioners will receive an Certificate of Attendance in Tongue Diagnosis from the Active Health Association affiliated with Beijing University of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). This qualification is not a practitioner qualification. The knowledge gained on this workshop will benefit future training and practice in TCM
